Tom Boonen will not take part in the Tour de San Luis, Argentina on January 21 as scheduled although he has recovered from the severe intestinal infection earlier in December. According to Nieuwsblad.be, Mark Cavendish is the rider who is replacing him.
Boonen started off his successful 2012 campaign at the Tour de San Luis last year, where he showed his form coming second in stage 2 and winning the final stage. From there he went on an impressive run, including 2 stages and the overall classification in the Tour of Qatar and then the famous classics double of the Tour of Flanders and Paris – Roubaix.
Boonen was hospitalized for 3 days in late november due to the infection, which made him miss the Omega Phama-Quickstep team building activities in Slovakia. He managed to join the squad for its training camp in spain in December, but the team decided to start his season later due to the time off due to the illness. He continues training on January 2 in Calpe, Spain.
The Tour de San Luis will be cavendish’s first ride for the Belgian team, back on his preferred specialized bike.
