Elite Volare Mag Force trainer review

As I was fed up of the cold and there was more snow promised for the weekend, I decided to take the plunge and buy a turbo trainer. Up until now, I had always done all my training outdoors, intervals, base and climbing.

I needed something that was going to replicate riding outdoors, so variable resistance was a must. I was also told that a gel turbo also aids turbo resistance to match it to riding on an actual road. Having shopped around, I eventually found the Elite Volare which ticked all the boxes with 5 levels of resistance and a gel roller. At only £100, I picked one up the next day and I was pleasantly surprised.

The turbo comes packaged in two pieces, the resistance unit and the frame. Assembly is simple and is done with a few bolts that are included as well as an allen key. Attach the tightening handle onto the side of the frame and you’re good to go. Build quality appeared to be great and the instructions were easy to follow.

My first use of the turbo was only around 20 minutes. I had planned for tabatas intervals that day anyway so after a quick warmup, I shifted the resistance lever to the second setting and began the intervals. The speeds I reached matched roughly what they would of been on normal tarmac and acceleration felt identical. My only complaint was that the roller slowed the wheel down far too much when free wheeling. Not much of a problem but if you free wheel for a few seconds to stretch, you don’t really want to be accelerating again.

There was a slight movement to the right as I was using it and I found myself angled after about ten minutes. I think this is due to using the turbo on carpet and the fact that I’m a bit one sided anyway, I’m sure a grippy mat or using it on a tiled floor would sort this problem. Other than that, the bike was held securely once it was screwed in using the included QR skewer, which I no longer switch as it seems strong enough to use on the road.

Overall, I’m very impressed with this turbo and I’m sure it will aid my training and give me options on rainy days for a long time as the turbo is very simple, so there isn’t a lot that can go wrong and the simple design works well. I would recommend to anyone wanting a good value turbo

You can purchase the Elite Volare turbo trainer from Decathlon for £99.99.
